Tim Berners Lee created the web. Now he’s out to remake the digital world.

Tim Berners Lee is lately busy thinking over following questions:
  • The Internet Hasn’t Lived Up to Expectations, What is the Way Forward?
  • The internet was supposed to be an infrastructure that gave everyone access to self-actualize and create value no matter how competitive it became, but we are failing at that.

Let's note that the beauty of the web is that it is not just a solution or digital product, but it was invented as an infrastructure for other internet related solutions to be built upon, and it hasn’t really failed in that regards as we have seen the rise of various software solutions, mobile apps, websites, artificial intelligence, and the likes. The web has become a hub for people to create various forms of value even as technology and the internet continue to penetrate into every aspect of human life.

As people began to create imaginative solutions and platforms, the battle to stand out and lead various business categories, trumped the initial purpose of the internet as the web has now been dominated by certain gatekeepers and the various value chain is now being manipulated to the benefits of a selected few. There are various factors that have contributed to the present toxic and unhealthy state of the internet but they all seem to revolve around these three factors: access to the value in the ecosystem, data control, and market monopoly.

But now, Berners-Lee, 65, believes the online world has gone astray. Too much power and too much personal data, he said, reside with tech giants like Google and Facebook — “silos” is the generic term he favors, instead of referring to the companies by name. Fueled by vast troves of data, he said, they have become surveillance platforms and gatekeepers of innovation.

Releasing his creation for free 30 years ago, the inventor of the world wide web, Tim Berners-Lee, famously declared: “this is for everyone”. Today, his invention is used by billions – but it also hosts the authoritarian crackdowns of antidemocratic governments, and supports the infrastructure of the most wealthy and powerful companies on Earth.

Now, in an effort to return the internet to the golden age that existed before its current incarnation as Web 2.0 – characterised by invasive data harvesting by governments and corporations – Berners-Lee has devised a plan to save his invention.

This involves his brand of “data sovereignty” – which means giving users power over their data – and it means wrestling back control of the personal information we surrendered to big tech many years ago.

Berners-Lee’s latest intervention comes as increasing numbers of people regard the online world as a landscape dominated by a few tech giants, thriving on a system of “surveillance capitalism” – which sees our personal data extracted and harvested by online giants before being used to target advertisements at us as we browse the web.

The idea behind solid is to create a platform where every user of the web can create their own Personal Online data stores(Pods) that would be used to store their personal and private data and be used to regulate the way any service provider can use these data; an individual can host this data on a solid server with their personalized access to the data that is used to decide if software applications can read or write on the data, therefore, the user has total control over his/her data and does not have to worry about leaving any data behind whenever they delete a mobile app as the app cannot store their data but can only read or write on it.

The company (Inrupt is responsible for Solid), is already receiving positive responses as it claims that there are already is already claiming that there are already 1200 new Solid community members, more than 30 open-source developers building apps on the platform, and 60,000 developer accounts.

Others say the Solid-Inrupt technology is only part of the answer. “There is lots of work outside Tim Berners-Lee’s project that will be vital to the vision,” said Kaliya Young, co-chair of the Internet Identity Workshop, whose members focus on digital identity.

Berners-Lee said that his team was not inventing its own identity system, and that anything that worked could plug into its technology.

Inrupt faces a series of technical challenges, but none that are “go-to-the-moon hard,” said Bruce Schneier, a well-known computer security and privacy expert, who has joined Inrupt as its chief of security architecture. And Schneier is an optimist. “This technology could unlock an enormous amount of innovation,” potentially becoming a new platform as the iPhone was for smartphone apps, he said.

“I think this stands a good chance of changing how the internet works,” he said. “Oddly, Tim has done it before."

IE does not open some website - MSN and Bing opens, but Google, Facebook etc are blocked : A Case Study to understand Transport Layer Security ( TLS 1.0 ) Protocol

It is a rough day when you want to start a new research on your old machine and try installing an old OS like XP and suddenly your world come crushing as no websites are being opened up in the Internet Browser.

The story started when today I tried to open google.co.in on my Internet Browser on this freshly prepared old machine ( I minted an HP Compaq Presario V200, bought in 2004, with Windows XP, a genuine copy of it!) The IE was not able to open any website. To my surprise, msn.com and bing.com were opening. I mean WTF! I somehow held to opinion to myself as my younger brother was scolded last night for not using abusive slangs. But comeon. WTF Actually!

See the error screenshot:

Obviously, this halted my program to start actually with the parallel computing experiment i am planning. I wanted to dig deeper as to what must be happening. Clearly, there must be some Security options issue. The error message read as follows:

"The page cannot be displayed.
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.
To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click "Diagnose Connection Problems..."

After, investigation and checking where my network is getting blocked (used fiddler and a network sniffer for the purpose), i found that its the strong security measures taken up by some sites that are blocking me launching those ones.

The solution was to enable some settings in the Internet Options -> Advance Tab ->Security settings.

If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.

See the screenshot below:

So, in my case a missing TLS1.0 was the reason.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) and its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), both frequently referred to as "SSL", are cryptographic protocols that provide communications security over a computer network. Nowadays, major websites use TLS to secure all communications between their servers and web browsers.

The Transport Layer Security protocol aims primarily to provide privacy and data integrity between two communicating computer applications. The connection is private (or secure) because symmetric cryptography. The keys for this symmetric encryption are generated uniquely for each connection and are based on a shared secret negotiated at the start of the session (see TLS handshake protocol).

Furthermore, if you are using TLS, the connection ensures integrity because each message transmitted includes a message integrity check using a message authentication code to prevent undetected loss or alteration of the data during transmission.

Currently, a new 1.3 Transport Layer Security protocol is being drafted. And, going by the design and algorithms it has panelled in, I gurantee that there will be a number of websites that stand a chance to be blocked by standard webbrowsers. Its time when either webbrowser industry incorporates those supports fast or websites wait for some time to consume those super secure standards. In any ways, its nothing to panic. Rather, its a state to feel more secured.

So coming back to my case, enabling the TLS 1.0 option and restarting my browser solved the issue. Ah! Issue solved.

But Oh! Are Bing and MSN not that secured? Or, IE has a separate treatment for them?
Folks, you know what such an informed cue means to geeks like you. Enjoy!!

Reliance to launch 4G internet at INR 10 per GB. Cheap Dongle, cheap internet.

Karlo Dunia Mutthi Me!! Version 2.0

Once again Reliance is all set to show to the world that not only it is bold and consumer friendly, but also fond in exploring and occupying the entire business space available. Way back, it was Reliance who brought about a mobile revolution in the country. And now, it seems it will bring back data revolution across the nation.

Though it is coined by someone else, but I deeply remember the slogan "roti kapda ur makaan" changed into "roti kapda makaan aur bandwidth". Envisioned by one of the legends of modern times, his dream is all set to come true.

Get Tax and Medical Benefits
Reliance has announced to offer 4G internet at 10 Rs per GB in India!!! This is tenth of a price for 2G and 50 times less than current 3G prices. The report says that RIL will also offer tablets at a subsidized price of Rs 3,500 and will bundle data plans for  Rs 10 per GB. However, the company did not commit a launch date. It was communicated that it was still in the planning phase.

Much more can be read at http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2011-12-06/news/30481876_1_ril-plans-ril-management-tariff-plans

Now I seriously advice other players in this arena to start treating RIL's launch as a threat at this moment. And if very near moments to come, they do not come up with other strategies, it may really be very hard time for them. I would like to notify all that:

1. RIL is the only company to have pan-India spectrum. It can offer wireless broadband services on the 4G technology platform. It has already paid Rs 13,000 crore for these airwaves, as the story goes.

2. In 2003, the beautiful white handsets in INR 500 has been a huge success in the mass, but a gigantic loss for the company. In 2006, after Anil Ambani took charge of the telecom unit of the divided Reliance group, and bore a loss of nearly Rs 4,500 crore.

3.RIL also suggests of entering profoundly in tablets world. Currently the cheapest tablets in the market are between Rs 8000 and Rs 13,000. Aakash is not being counted in this research, because many still believe Aakash to be merely a hyperbole :). [Though, if they seriously come up, they have potential of rocking market. But may be they need consultants like me ;) ]

4.Typically, 1GB of data costs an operator less than Re.1. But they charge around Rs.100 on 2G and Rs.300-500 on 3G for same amount of data. The high cost is due to what they spend on infrastructure setup and maintenance. But after they reach breakeven (still 1-2 years left for many), the data prices will slash down drastically.

View ultimate Photo Printing and Camera Options
So plans for other companies should be:

a. Reduce data prices
b. increase uplink and download speeds
c. offer some package like 10 rupees a month for facebook. typically not many cross 500 mb on  a mobile device for facebook alone. you can plan to block video streaming if you like in this special pack
d. focus more on your security, and advertise on those stuff. because once the price is normalized, what everyone cares about next is your quality.
e.Treat RIL plans seriously and gear up your management people to just not to fight, rather survive in the business.
f. Think on the lines of increasing volume of sale and decreasing profit per user at present. Overall you will get more profit. Old management principal. But its high time to apply now!!!
g. target special segments like parents, rural areas - these people normally use less but want more things which are much more simpler than 3G/4G speeds - It is support, training.
h. properly target SMEs in India. They are growing at tremendous rate and they have huge bandwidth needs. Remember how Gmail and other Google Apps captured the market.
i. Contact Me :) Though it may cost you, but someone snatching your user base would be more painful!! Proper plans targeting proper people is my especiality. :)

5. Be adviced everyone, that Reliance will be using Qualcomm LTE technology. Hence the devices may be a slightly costlier, but speed guaranteed :)

6. We should not forget that in 2012, Reliance Industries (RIL) has signed a deal with Moscow-based company Spirit DSP to license Video and Voice engine. This may also be seen as a future plan of Skype-like video and voice calling services (VVoIP) to its subscribers. And this time with fastest LTE technology of Qualcomm. Hats off Reliance!! Skype (now Microsoft) and WhatsApp( now planning to charge its users), it is time for you people too to put in some serious thoughts.

7. The plan is not so easy path for reliance too. Lets assume that Reliance 4G gets 60 million subscribers [Ques: How I guessed? Answer: Read magazines and surveys !!]. Further assume that each user consumes 10 GB of Data every month. This means that normal bill of such a user today with other plans is around Rs 1200 + 300 as taxes, i.e. around 1500 INR. Now RIL has plans to chare INR 100 + lets say a tax of 20 INR, making a total of INR 120. So, the present difference is around 1380 INR. Hence, if we assume other operators to stay at same price, RIL will have a top-line of 60 million* 1380 i.e. around INR 7000 crore. And, it is important to keep in account that 10 GB is a surplus amount. Most, or lets say almost all, will have no need to cross that barrier. Hence, I guess for them to break even, it may take nearly 3  years.

Kudos to Reliance from the core of my heart. I have all my wishes to you people to come up with a successful plan, and make this dream come true. Ofcource, deep penetration in the market and influencing subscribers data usage habbits is the key to success here.

I just wish everything goes fine for users and RIL both. 2003 repetition of white handsets is all I fear about :)

--Cheers
Future is cheap.
Hick :)
Future luxury is directly proportional to my growth and inversely proportional to my present luxuries.

Websites going dark: protest against SOPA Act

Post from Internet Censorship Voyager Blog.

Report from Internet Censorship Voyager Facebook Page:

Thousands of websites are going dark today to protest the SOPA ACT (Stop Online Piracy Act). This law is designed to thwart copyright infringement. But it could do more harm to the Internet as a whole. I, and thousands of Web experts across the globe see a threat to the functionality of the Internet. STOP SOPA.

Hacker's Only Satellite: h-Internet Birth

Post from Internet Censorship Voyager Blog.

HOS: Hacker’s Only Satellite and Internet Censorship
A new scheme was described at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin. And this discussion brings a new threat : What if Computer hackers plan and take the internet out of bounds of any censors.; What if the put their own communication satellites into orbit. Vohooooo!!!

It has been reported by several sources that the hacker activist Nick Farr has called people to contribute to this project. According to him and a lot of Censorship anti-preachers believe that the increasing threat of internet censorship has triggered this project.

A new law (Obviously a pseudo and a dreamt of law, not even in its nascent state ;) ) Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) has been proposed in US as an example of the kind of threat facing online freedom. If passed, the act would allow for some sites to be blocked on copyright grounds.

Now question comes of getting their own satellite revolving around earth. So that has already technically been possible. Thanks to scientists like Newton and his gravity equations, we know of escape velocity and orbital velocity etc. Jokes apart, as a matter of fact space missions have been started my nations only. But today many amateurs and hobbyists have launched objects into the space.

(God this is the same space once Yuri Gagrin travelled. Some big man come up…donate me too..i also wanna explore outer space…obviously before I am finally being produced to God!!)

Moving further, the Berlin conference was the latest meeting held by the Chaos Computer Club. This club has been very influential not only for those interested in exploiting or improving computer security, but also for people who enjoy tinkering with hardware and software. It’s a great dream but if these satellites are really made to work together in a global network, will form another Internet.

Let me cut the story here to pinpoint that presently apart from thousands intranet and small LAN, WAN etc, the biggest computer network is what we regularly use. This is called the Internet. But if some other type of privately owned hacker’s internet grows (Let’s call the h-Internet at this time….because Hacker’s Internet), then no government etc can ever control anything. Because once data are transferred on routers and switches and wires, there is no Superman who can go and change those data being transmitted as 00010100101011010101010…form.
This will technically be not a free service, nor even so cheap as the Internet today. But seriously who cares?

Mr. Narr thumbs up. Explore more. My blog is with you.
And who knows someday I also use your internet (remember h-Internet!!!)

And you sir, my readers, now before going to some other articles or switching to other website, send some 0100010101010101… bytes to Google Adserver, by clicking on some Advertisement links. ;)

Internet Censorship: Mohd Anwar Jamal Faiz : Thought 2

Post from Internet Censorship Voyager Blog.

I would again re-emphasize that the--

Internet Censorship is wrong and devastating. We are still fortunate that it is a Fool's day prank. We may achieve it but those efficient programmers are in Mars. Find them and get the task done!

what do you feel?

Internet Censorship: Mohd Anwar Jamal Faiz: Thought 1

Post from Internet Censorship Voyager Blog.

The Internet and cyber Censorship has become latest craze of governments across the globe. But they fail to understand the real situation and challenge in solving the issue:

"The time you spend while reading this article must have been used by several people at several locations to generate several offensive contents for several societies in several languages over several internet portals. And be assured of several formats too!"

Lets see how far the ban in china, Arab spring, and ruling against Facebook, Yahoo, Google etc in India takes us. I believe that the Internet is free, is free, and not be curbed. So, no need to be afraid of. as No Mayan Calendar end date has still been set for the Internet!!

Cheers!!

Google chrome wrong message for network diagnostic

If your internet connection is not available or lost, and you try to open some website over the internet using Google Chrome, you get an Error. Absolutely, there is no problem untill now. But Google advises you a method to verify and check the problem. Now if that resolution is wrong, there is a problem. And if the wrong resolution is given by Google, it is a big problem.

The same issue is also posted in Google Chrome Help forums at Click to See this in Google Forum
See the picture for instance: (Click on picture to view it large)

Google says to go to %windir%, which simply means the windows installation folder. On my system it comes out to be C:\windows
After this it says, to launch network diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe. Now there is no file as such at said location.

Actually there are two problems:

1) If you type what is advised by google on the Start->Run.
%windir%/network diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe
Then there is a error saying, there is no folder c:\windows/network. Actually the path should be in double quotes. The people proficient in computer systems and troubleshooting would even know this beforehand. But I dont know why Google believes that even general people would know of this.

2) On my system, XP SP3, there was no folder named network diagnostic at all in C:\windows. So that means even if I used double quotes in the path, I got know resolution.

My personal gut feeling is that, Google sould not advise those methods which are not generic. Also, the advises should be easy to understand by the common masses. I guess, my voice being heard.

Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) and Use of Adobe Flex in creating RIA

Rich Internet applications (RIAs) offer a rich, engaging experience that improves user satisfaction and increases productivity. Using the broad reach of the Internet, RIAs can be deployed across browsers and desktops. It enables a new class of applications that combines the responsiveness and interactivity of desktop applications with the broad reach and ease of distribution of the web. RIAs can yield increased return on investment (ROI) by providing simple means and improving the user interaction-enabling users to find information more easily, complete tasks quickly and accurately, and use rich data visualization to make better presentations as well as improved decisions.

Basically RIA is a technology that caters to following two need of the hour:
• A new class of client runtime that can support the range of needs inherent in rich Internet business applications
• Tools and technology that can provide a productive environment for building, maintaining, and managing these applications throughout their lifecycle

As mentioned by Adobe Official Website, RIAs offer organizations a proven, cost-effective way to deliver modern applications with real business benefits:
• Offer users a richer, more engaging experience.
• Keep pace with users' rising expectations.
• Increase customer loyalty and generate higher profits.
• Leverage existing personnel, processes, and infrastructure.

It is very important to note that business executives increasingly recognize the value customer engagement brings to their businesses. For example, in a recent study on engagement conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit on behalf of Adobe, 80% of executives said that better engagement translates into improved customer loyalty, and 75% said they believed it meant higher profits. In March 2007, Forrester Research published "The Business Case for Rich Internet Applications," a report based on interviews with RIA technology providers and designers, as well as Forrester Research clients and customers. The report revealed that "well-designed RIAs can produce eye-popping results that can help prove the value of current investments and make the case for future RIA projects."

The first point before adopting RIA is to identify which technology is best. Undoubtedly, a unanimous choice would be Adobe products and framework. This becomes so easy choice because of primarily two reasons:
1) Usefullness and effectiveness
2) Less effort to adopt and build applications
3) Beautiful animation and visual appeal
4) Prominence of Flash Run Time Environment over computers worldwide.

If I try to analyze the fourth point in a better way, I would conclude that building RIAs with Adobe technologies offers additional benefits. Adobe's clients have a long history of delivering consistent, cross-platform experiences. The Adobe® Flash® Player runtime reaches 98% of Internet-enabled desktops and more than 450 million devices, offering businesses greater reach than with any other client technology available. Adobe AIR™, the latest client from Adobe, leverages the power of Flash Player while adding the capability to deploy RIAs directly to the desktop.
Finally, since Adobe technologies enable designers and developers to build RIAs with their current tools and skills, businesses can leverage existing personnel and assets to enhance customer engagement while minimizing expense.

Flex is a standard-based programming model for high performance rich internet applications. Flex application will take advantage of adobe flash player 9, 10 et. Al. and this will enable developer to extend the capabilities enables the client with richer applications in real time. Technically, the Flex framework represents the presentation tire in multitier architecture applications and will be easy integrated with server-side functionality. If you want to create flex application then, you will start this application on Flex builder, which is IDE with visual layout, debugging, skinning, coder hinting and styling for developing rich Internet applications. In my opinion, the biggest advantages of using the Flash player as a runtime for your RIA as opposed to using AJAX: Firstly, the Write once, deploy cross platform capability. Secondly, You can turn your Flex application into a desktop application without much changes. So that means switching your application from Web based to Desktop and Vice versa is so easy in Flex. Thirdly, you can build UI's that look and feel the way you want them to, and not forced into having limitations by your development technology. Fourth, Flex provides many many tools, data grids, containers, components, 3d integration etc. Fifth ActioScript 3.0 provides you endless features and capabilities. And lastly, you can run Flex based Flash swf files even with PHP, Java or Asp.net. And in addition, there are many other benefits that compel anyone to learn, try and use Flex.

So wish you all great applications to come up from Adobe flex. Rich Internet Applications have started blooming and I can only see them in coming future. A long time to reign for RIAs particularly Adobe Flex and AS 3.0. (IMO (, in my opinion) ;) )

Happy Flexing!!!
